Year of the beads

Year of the beads is my personal challenge for year 2009.

Here are my rules for myself:

1. Every month has a theme to be followed. When month starts the theme should be announced.

2. The beads should all be somewhat different technically.

3. The beads do not have to be perfect. The ideas are more important than results. Try to make at least 1/3 of beads sketchbook quality rather than finished.

4. Bead is any reasonably sized object with a hole.

5. Not all beads need to published here, and there is no pressure to have “daily bead” published. How ever if there are enough beads they will be published one a day.

6. I can change rules any time.

Why am I doing this?

I have been making jewellery for years but never really concentrated solely on beads as I make whatever is needed for design. I need simple examples for teaching. I need to study simplicity more. There are tons of techniques available in the literature and the net, how ever I feel the simplest things and themes are somewhat unstudied. There must be lots of new ways to do old things and probably some new ideas rise from repeating the old ones. I need to find a project that keeps me on working and discovering – I need to concentrate on something for a year and I am not much of a sketchbook keeper really. I need to do it (at least partly) publically to ensure myself that I just don’t stop before getting the work done.

What I hope to achieve?

Maybe enough ideas and material to publish instructions for beads in some form. I hope the project inspires others to study similar ideas along with me. I hope to make at least 12 necklaces with 12 different themes. I hope this project will inspire someone else and give visual glossary of ideas for other people.

Thanks Martina. I do hope this will be interesting to both us ourself and to the readers.

Awesome idea! I hope you’re able to keep it running throughout the year. Personally, I have ‘discipline problems’ – would find it difficult to commit to a project for more than a couple of months :(

Great idea! Love seeing the results.
